NEWS FROM LUANSOBE SCHOOL September 2004

Last year there were slightly more boys than girls studying at LUBS, 391 compared to 341, and the boys fared better with their exam results. One reason for this is that girls have more domestic duties outside school. As a girl grows older, she is expected to help look after younger siblings and work in home.

We hope however to address the issue of poorer results amongst the girls with the PAGE initiative, the first results of which will be available at the end of 2004. PAGE is the Programme for Advancement of Girls’ Education, and is a teaching method whereby the boys and girls are taught in gender-segregated classes. It is hoped that there will be an improvement in the girls’ performance when the pilot Grade 1 classes take their Grade 7 exams in 2004 and that this will then be reflected in better results for the girls Trade Plus Aid helps in the Upper School.

The Kaloko Trust is truly grateful to Trade Plus Aid for helping the children to continue with secondary education. It gives hope for their future
